Curious about average IQ around here

I scored a 98 on the ASVAB when I took it back in the day. Had my pick of whatever w whoever.
I scored 214 on the ASVAB. Recruiters from 4 different armed forces all told me I could have any position I wanted if I joined. But when I listed out all the stuff I was interested in doing, they each told me that they don't have those positions internally, always outsource them. So I said well I guess I'll have to go work for one of those companies you outsource to. They told me that would be a better path for me. I was actually disappointed at the time. But now I'm just so glad they told me the truth instead of lying to me to fill quota.

Edit: Actually one of the 4 tried lying to me at first. But then he felt bad later and told me the truth.

Navy lied right?

I was inartful when I wrote about the ASVAB: it is indeed an expanded IQ test with specific questions targeted for specific aptitudes, but it's known as an intelligence test; it just very purposefully avoids aligning itself in regard to creating 100-normed IQ scores.

Aptitude is actually just a word for potential for applicable intelligence.

The term y'all are searching for is Talents. These are positive, useful qualities one is born with. All talents require some degree of diligence and practice in order to make full use of them, but they are predominantly innate. Intelligence is a talent. Intuition is a talent. Perfect pitch is a talent. Allowing for wind, drag and gravity without having to think about it can also be an innate talent; it becomes a skill if it's developed, much like the person learning how to play an instrument through years of lessons.

All these and more are talents, but perfect pitch is not intelligence, and intelligence is not perfect pitch.
Thanks for your further clarification.

I don't know. Seems like it's now delving into semantics. Gifts, talents, skills....

All I know is that God has given each of us with various abilities. How we use them determines a lot.

I can't remember the exact phrasing but I heard someone say that your altitude is determined just as much by attitude as it is aptitude. That's very much in line with my libertarian self- determination mindset.

Just remember that our mindsets can greatly determine our outcomes -- and even influence the outcomes of others -- but no amount of intensely holding a worldview will erase the limitations on the one side or the talents (Creator-given) on the other side. It matters whether we accurately label something a gift/talent (innate) or a skill (self-developed through learning and/or teaching). Otherwise, we just fool ourselves about why things are as they are, and the result is Denial.

We have great freedom to determine how we succeed or fail, but that freedom is always freedom within definitive limits.

Oh, I totally agree. I wasn't explicit enough in defining the limitations that are also God given. No amount of attitude will give me enough altitude to dunk a basketball. I think we do a great disservice to children when we tell them that they can grow up to be anything they want yo be if they just try hard enough. That type of infantile attitude has given us the whole gender fluidity mindset...but that's another topic.

Did you ever see the movie Rudy? True story of a runt that wanted to play football for Notre Dame.... and did!

Granted, it was a one time deal when they were ahead enough it didnt matter, but he inspired the entire team with his heart and courage.

Didn't see it, but heard of it.
I know it's based on a true story, though. From what I heard, the real story isn't all that sexy and exciting, though.

The movie wasn't either. Lol but he did succeed kind of against all odds at living his dream. Only player at that school in history to get carried off the field.... on shoulders, not a stretcher.
