What is a "Spirit of Truth"?

Rare in scripture, but then scripture doesn't often go into great detail on the inner workings of the spiritual world. We really don't know how common it is. The important thing here, and why I brought it up, is that it tells us what is true, what is feasible. The dog that senses spirits is a lot less crazy than the talking donkey that sees them.
You’re right, scripture doesn’t go into much detail on it. Maybe there is a reason for that.

My whole thing isn’t that spiritual stuff doesn’t exist, that there is no such thing as a spiritual war going on, or that christians don’t ever see things in the spiritual realm. What i am saying is that these things are anecdotal at best, and they are not things that we as Christians build doctrines around. Doctrine is teaching. These things don’t become teachings of the church. Our final authority on faith and practice is the written Word of God.

This is all true, but the Word of God is the manual for life, the Holy Spirit comes to help us in its application to life.

Just a thought, the hearing range in humans is 20hz to 20khz. The upper end will decrease as we get older. A horse’s range of hearing is from 14hz to 25khz. A dog hears from 40hz to 60khz.

One theory I heard was the spirit realm is in a higher frequency. (Only theory, unless someone has learned differently) But, should it be that the spiritual does make sounds, but outside our range of hearing and in the range of certain animals, it would make sense that some animals would be sensitive to such things.

Strictly theory, idea, however you want to call it, but I’ve seen my dog react way before me.

I believe "Spirit of Truth" is the name of a heavenly spirit not the Holy Spirit. Just as "Religion" is the name of a demon.

"Wars are waged in the name of Religion"

I get that many of you will not agree with me on that, that's ok. The enemy (Satan) comes to steal kill and destroy. Where there is religion there is deception and a house divided will Not stand!
The Spirit of Truth is just that a spirit that sheds light on Yahwehs word. It reveals spiritual truths to those truly seeking it.

John 14:17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot receive Him, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. But you do know Him, for He abides with you and will be in you.

John 15:26 When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father--the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father--He will testify about Me

John 16:13 However, when the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth. For He will not speak on His own, but He will speak what He hears, and He will declare to you what is to come.

All of these scriptures speak of a spiritual being. It does not say Holy Spirit.
Holy Spirit is capitalized which shows the importance of His being. Spirit of truth is not or it would say the Holy Spirit of truth, Spirit of truth comes from Yahweh thus the capital S, truth is what He brings but is not the same as the Holy Spirit...

This is my understanding of the scriptures. Thank God for the Spirit of truth because if I need correction I know I will be corrected. LOL!

Anyway this is my 2 cents. Take it or leave it

Could be.
I wouldn’t use capitalization or non-capitalization as definitive though, I think that it was pretty much at the whim of the translator.
And somebody can correct me. :)

Interesting thoughts that open a bigger can of worms, possibly validating your position.

I've always thought of the Holy Spirit as a 'she,' as in, 'Wisdom' spoken of in the early chapters of Proverbs. At least one of the verses you cite refer to the 'Spirit of truth' as a 'he' and being 'sent from the Father.'

At ghe same time, the Holy Spirit seems to be ghe 'Advocate'..... Hmmm..... now I have to go dig.

Actually all three verses refer to the Spirit of truth as he.

@Patricia C please don’t take this personally. I don’t know you personally and I would assume that you are a kind and caring person. So what I’m about to say isn’t meant as a personal attack.

What you have stated as being your two cents is incorrect. How can I be so sure about that? I would challenge you to go and read those verses in their context, and then come back and let us know who Jesus is referring to as the Spirit of Truth in those chapters. When i say context i mean read the chapters, that you pulled those verses from, in their entirety one after the other.

Satan can quote scripture to but he twists it out of its context and I’m sorry to say that seem to be what you’re doing here.

Now concerning “steal, kill, and destroy”. You said that Satan comes to steal kill and destroy. Well I suppose it is possible that he does, but that’s not what Jesus was referring to. If you read the context Jesus is talking about the Pharisees/hirelings, essentially false teachers.

Now the religious spirit. Religious Spirit is the name of a demon? I’m not sure where you got that one, did you make it up?

I would also recommend reading 1 timothy chapter 2.

Okay, so I'm chasing the rabbit...

16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, (Helper = Spirit of truth)
26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. (Helper = Holy Spirit)

(Therefore, 'Spirit of truth' = 'Holy Spirit')

Interestingly, 'Holy Spirit' or 'Holy Ghost' (KJV) are only used a couple times in the whole gospel and just once in the three chapters that discuss the 'Helper' or 'Spirit of truth' at length... @Patricia C , easy oversight to make... Blessings.

It is at their whim, but in older translations might indicate the traditional understanding.

I've always thought of the Holy Spirit as a 'she,' as in, 'Wisdom' spoken of in the early chapters of Proverbs.

Wisdom might be a gift of the spirit? I don't know. There is some basis to think of the HS as she, but it's far from certain and may be very very wrong.

This all brought to remembrance the seven spirits of God...

John to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace be unto you, and peace, from him which is, and which was, and which is to come; and from the seven Spirits which are before his throne;

That in Rev 1:4 and then in Isaiah 11:2, speaking of Jesus Christ...

And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD;

So: might, counsel, understanding, wisdom, fear of Yahweh, knowledge. That's only 6 spirits, but I think you have to count 'the spirit of Yahweh', which get's you 7. But if not, what are we missing? One might say truth, but 'Understanding' in that passage is also translated 'truth' and 'discernment'.

Interestingly spirit in that verse is defined here, and is a feminine noun.

These 7 spirits are also talked about in Rev 3:1, 4:5, 5:6:

And unto the angel of the church in Sardis write; These things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars; I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead.

And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices: and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God.

And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth.

My question therefor is, what are these 7 spirits? Are these different than the Holy Spirit? I think probably not. One and the same? Is this a 7 in 1 sort of thing analogous to the 3 in 1 of the Godhead?

What is interesting to me is that this seems to be an important aspect of God, these 7 spirits are before the throne, the Holy Spirit of God. Yet it is almost never talked about.

A beautiful reminder that we don’t have all truth, and not everything can be defined by verses from Scripture.

One of the things it is good to keep in mind is we but see through a glass darkly. The New Testament isn't a systematic theology. Not everything is explained.

It was the impulse to completely understand all the exact details, and more importantly to hold a particular understanding of those as definitive of fellowship, that led to many of the great rifts in the church over history.

@Patricia C , it has been pointed out to me privately that my post, while true, came across as condescending and arrogant. My apologies.

He pointed out the areas in which I came across that way, and i can see what he means. Again I apologize.

Please spit out the sticks of my own lack of communication skills, but retain the truth that is in my post.

Excellent brain candy and addition to this thread. Thanks!

No answers here, but rereading the first few chapters of Proverbs.

As I have said in my first response to this thread. I am so glad that we have the Spirit of truth to reveal truths. I am not above correction and all who believe they have ALL the right answers are usually off. WE ALL have room for correction.

I can defend my position with scripture however I believe it will just cause a rift so I will back out of this thread slowly and once again leave the men to figure it out.

Blessing, Patricia

The men aren’t going to figure it out.
Some may argue their position, but it won’t be defined.
Feel free to state the basis for what you believe and ignore that which you don’t agree with.

Yes, please, as @steve suggested, what you have to say is important in the overall grand scheme of things.

We have already got out of this that the thought of the Holy Spirit as 'she' to consider, wonder what else there is.

As I understand, and I’m going from memory, so excuse my not pulling up scripture at this time. The Father, Son and Holy Spirit are references in the masculine. But the Holy Spirit is the person of questionnon this thread.

Holy Spirit is the nurturer, the comforter, teacher, and on and on. If the three parts of a family, the mother is the nurturer, the comforter, the teacher and on and on. He, the Holy Spirit does some really cool stuff for us, I know, I’m talking to the choir. But the Trinity each has a role and the Holy Spirit is a perfect example for a mom, but He is referred to in the masculine.
