Why do unbelievers deny obvious facts?

Have you ever noticed how unbelievers go out of their way not to investigate facts?

For instance one person is very insistent that Jesus never died on a cross, (because of the Quran written hundreds of years later by people who were not eyewitnesses) but whenever I point out historical evidence she starts saying the new testament is full of contradictions or changes the subject. It seems like she knows that if she were to investigate the facts she would have to admit Jesus was executed so she wants to hide from the truth. By the way I am not hassling her because she initiated the conversation about Christianity and why she thinks certain Christian beliefs do not make sense, and she was very talkative about Christianity until confronted with evidence. And she never said I was rude, she just tries to dodge the subject, which in a sense she brought up herself by asking questions about Christianity.

Even if the new testament if full of contradictions there is evidence outside the new testament that Jesus was executed. It could be the case that Jesus was executed but the new testament is not 100% true, so what she is saying does not make any sense at all, if you are academically honest. (By the way I am not saying that the new testament is not 100% true.)

Why do people cling to belief systems even when historical evidence against their belief system clearly outweighs evidence for it?

I don't know, unbelieveable ain't it?

DTT,

The Bible gives us the clear answer on this. 1 Corinthians 2:14 tells us why. People are so radically corrupted by sin that even their reasoning faculties are skewed and everything they think is tainted with the deceptive nature of sin.

Ephesians 2:1-3 also describes the reality of this. In theology we call this doctrine of man's full or complete depravity. It is a doctrine that if you would embrace it would clear up much in your own mind. If I recall correctly you affirm that people are born innocent or partially good.

The Bible says something different though. When mankind fell into sin they come forth from the womb with a heart and mind that is corrupt, unholy, and so in love with themselves that they cherish their sin and waddle in it.

Therefore, when the natural man examines facts, evidences, and truths about Christ which are obvious to anyone with a born again mind it is not so obvious to them because their minds are trapped by the powers of sin and it is so bad that they even love being in that condition.

Because they're not willing to admit that their belief in something may be incorrect. It would be too faith-shaking for some people to admit that what they have been taught could be wrong, incorrect, or twisted facts.

I spent several hours discussing infant baptism with someone, providing plenty of scriptural references, but because they'd been taught otherwise, they refused to see the evidence in front of them. Their best claim was scripture that said that a person had to believe and be baptized, yet ignored the context of it, as well as ignoring that it required both for it to "work" to put it crudely, but that you didn't have to have both at the same time, just like circumcision, which it replaced.

You'd think that simple truths would be easy for people who seek the truth to see and understand, but some people would rather cling to dogma and doctrine than seek the truth.

Well I think that people are increasingly depraved after having committed their first sin, which is usually very early.

I am using an example from everyday life because of your human limitations. Just as you used to offer yourselves as slaves to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer yourselves as slaves to righteousness leading to holiness.
Romans 6:19 NIV

Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.
John 8:34 NIV

Of course after they choose to enter in a proper personal relationship with Jesus (of the type approved by Jesus) they become decreasingly depraved as a general trend.

25 See to it that you do not refuse him who speaks. If they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, how much less will we, if we turn away from him who warns us from heaven? 26 At that time his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised, “Once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens.”[e] 27 The words “once more” indicate the removing of what can be shaken—that is, created things—so that what cannot be shaken may remain.

28 Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, 29 for our “God is a consuming fire.”[f]
[e] Hebrews 12:26 Haggai 2:6
[f] Hebrews 12:29 Deut. 4:24
Hebrews 12 :25-29 NIV

24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

28 When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, 29 because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.
Mathew 7:24-29 NIV

46 “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? 47 As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like. 48 They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. 49 But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.”
Luke 6:46-49 NIV

Maybe in some cases it does not shake their faith at all, because they already suspect the faith they profess is wrong, but it would be most inconvenient for them to profess something else.

Like they might be afraid their parents (and other people) will get angry at them

If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”
Mark 8:38 NIV

Whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.
Luke 9:26 NIV

16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile. 17 For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed—a righteousness that is by faith from first to last,[e] just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.”[f]

[e] Romans 1:17 Or is from faith to faith
[f] Romans 1:17 Hab. 2:4
Romans 1:16-17 NIV

20 I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death. 21 For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. 22 If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know! 23 I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far; 24 but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body.
Philippians 1:20-24 NIV

Hey by the way DTT, are you getting close to where we can start that book study together? Some of these questions will be addressed in that study I do believe. I know you were getting a few things out of the way before we started.

I was going to read it this Saturday but I could not find it.

I am planning on doing school work Monday through Friday and reading that book on Saturdays.
