General What does it mean to be a "Man of God?"

What does it mean to be a "Man of God?" Having this discussion with a friend made me wonder what it truly means to be a "Man of God." I told him following the Commands of God and holding fast to Yeshua (Jesus). However, looking back, that is too broad and general to truly grasp the understanding of that calling. What does it mean in scripture when David was called a "man after God's own heart?" How can we as men be as faithful of a servant as David was? Or Gideon (mighty man of valor)?

John 5:19 (KJV)
Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.

Our elder brother is a hard act to follow, but as a goal there is none better.
We are to be servants of the Most High, we are to serve Him and Him alone. What we do for Him in our own understanding is but wood, hay, and stubble. Hearing Him is a lifetime job, it must be our full time job.
That also is excessively broad, but how did Yah define David? A man after His own heart except for what he did with Uriah. David made lot of mistakes, but only one of them defined him.

I’m just pulling this out of the ether, but I am really liking it.

edit: corrected to that which he did with Uriah.
He sinned with Bathsheba, but she belonged to Uriah.

All men are imperfect, just like David. But David had an inward desire to be transformed into his Masters image in spite of his imperfections. He never allowed his imperfections to bind him to that current level of either righteousness or holiness.

Excepting Christ, A Godly man is not one who perfectly reflects the image and nature of God, but one who shows other men a progression of dying to self to be conformed more into his image, while never achieving perfection on earth.

You are who and what you are in Christ at this exact moment. By His Grace and Mercy and transformational power of His Spirit, you will never have to be at this level again. Like Paul, strive towards the mark of the high calling in Christ. Don’t be willing to ever settle for who or where you are in Christ, but don’t crucify yourself for being where He has brought you. Keep your eyes on where He’s taking you instead of the stage of imperfection you currently reside at.

The standard for a Godly man is Christ. If you are using even righteous men as your standard or litmus, you will either become discouraged or self righteous as they succeed or fail in their walk. This includes kings, apostles, prophets, legislators and the wisest of men. Learn from them, but don’t judge yourself by them.

In Biblical Hebrew the term איש אלוקים "man of Gd" is a synonym for "prophet"
