Typing smilies on BF by hand

Edit, August 2016: The info below applied to posts made on BF when the site was run with phpBB software and some of the buttons had become broken. Since the change to XenForo the advice isn't so relevant. Also, some of the codes listed below are no longer converted to smilies or other images, as the next post shows.

Since 'Disable BBCode' isn't currently an option for posts, I've marked sections of this post with 'code' tags instead.

While the buttons are broken, you can still make smilies as much as ever (you just don't have buttons to save you the typing). Here are the codes, in the same order shown on the posting screen:

(Before I submitted this I checked the "Disable smilies" box inserted 'code' tags, and that's why you can see the codes instead of the smilies they produce. Same for the BBCode examples below.)

For instructions on how to quote someone with a nice box around their words, or include a link, or make things bold, or some of the other nifty things the formatting buttons normally would do for you, follow the BBCode link just below the smilies, to the right of the post form. Again, by typing these codes you're just doing what the buttons inserted for you anyway.

If you're not sure how to use a code, just do your best and then use the Preview button to see if you got it right. Here are examples of a few of the most-used codes (you can also hover your pointer over the buttons above the form to see code examples appear):
