Will Lockheed Martin Change The World With Its New Fusion Reactor?

Lockheed Martin’s secretive Skunkworks laboratory registered a patent in March for a revolutionary technology that could solve the world’s energy problems for good – but don’t pop the champagne yet. The design is for a compact fusion reactor (CFR) which theoretically produces cheap, clean, near limitless energy – all from a device that could fit on the back of a semi. If it sounds far-fetched, that’s because it is. The sustained generation of a fusion reaction has evaded scientists since the idea was first conceived over 70 years ago.

The surprising part of this to me is they admitted it came from the Skunkworks lab. Usually they are not so open about the black budget origin of projects.

I use to work for Lockheed Martin, and somethings they are proud of like Lockheed SR-71 "Blackbird", which came the current stealth fighter planes, and ships, of today. The other things is, that if the are admitting it now, they are further along in development than is talked about.

This is true. This isn't like the private sector where they hype things ahead of time to gain press attention in order to attract investments, buyouts, or 15 minutes of fame. Its far more likely it is already built and working and they're doing a controlled roll-out of the tech. Something of this nature has long been rumored.

I hope the route they went was Thorium. That was the scalable and much safer competition to nuclear fusion in the 50s but the big money and politics went to reactor route and started to generate untold waste material with half life of 500 or so years.... I forget all the details from research a few years ago, but Thorium is a much safer option without meltdown possibilities. A single valley in Idaho has enough fuel to run the planet for centuries.

Fusion Reactors use sea water as fuel, no radioactive waste.

See? Now I'm showing my ignorance.... fision?. Talking about all the big reactos all over the US that DO produce waste.

Our house is powered by a nuclear fusion reactor.

It's called the sun. We use solar panels to capture the output and convert it to electricity. The bonus is that it keeps the giant bomb a bit further away just in case something goes wrong.

Seriously - this is great if true. However they could also have nothing more than an idea, and be filing the patent just to stop anyone else doing it on the offchance that it works.
