Ratio of girls to boys

My wife and I believe in plural marriages. We think it is biblical but also see that the Lord also shows us in other ways. Here is an example of what I mean. I am a 4th grade Sunday school teacher at our church and my wife is my assistant. This past Sunday as we were finishing up, one of the boys had something to say. He was complaining that this new year in elementary school was terrible. He said that there was to many girls in his class. Come to find out that almost all of the boys had the same problem, at this age they think girls are yucky. One particular boy said he had 24 girls to 6 boys. That is 4 girls to every one boy. I just smiled and looked at my wife. We didn't have to say anything. We knew what each other was thinking. :)

Hi His-driver,

That's interesting, but far from typical. Most schools have a nearly even distribution of males/females. I spent quite some time looking into all this, and discovered that women outnumber men only by a thin margin in reality. Roughly, worldwide, the ratio is 45% men to 55% women.

However, that doesn't take into account that MORE MALES ARE BORN THAN FEMALES. Boys have a tendency to die young. By our twenties, there are about even numbers of men and women, and by our forties and beyond, women outnumber men.

When the numbers are crunched, the reality of the situation is--if EVERYONE got married, which doesn't happen in reality--that AT MOST 2-3% OF THE POPULATION MIGHT BE ABLE TO BE POLYGYNIST with about two wives on average.

That's typical of societies where polygamy is allowed. For the most part, the general population are monogamist, with those men that are better leaders or wealthier or otherwise stand out having a greater number of polygamous marriages.

The difference between "subjective" observation and "objective" observation makes the one case you mentioned useless for general purposes. It's possible that you saw a fluke case, and every other school has an overabundance of boys. However, it is also possible that the ratio has been changing, and that more girls are being born nowadays. That would be something interesting to research, and your subjective account of that classroom may be an indicator of changing gender ratios.

true, but while every woman has the right to be married, men do not have that same right. it has to be earned in cultures that are not prostrate before the god of romance.

it would better to be the 4th wife of an industrious, intelligent, nice guy than the first wife of the kid with the DWI's and cannot/won't hold a job.
if women chose mates based on their character and reputation in the community instead of becoming victims of "falling in love" it would increase the number of "extra" women in the stats. right now we have those "extra" women (with children) after they have been discarded by men that had no right to be given the blessing of a wife.

I totally agree and have seen many such examples. Unfortunately usually it is the irresponsible man (who is not ready for marriage) who knocks up the girl and ends up marrying her :x (or not marrying her  ) where as good men who are responsible wait until they get married.

So the irresponsible men are serial monogamists who have been with many woman, but are considered fine when they settle down and live off one wife's pocket book. But the responsible men are often mistreated by society and would be scolded if they got a second wife, after they married the first one even though they have not been with other women than the wife or wives they married.
