Polygamists are also polyamorists

I've always considered polygamy and polyamory to be two different types of lifestyles, but if you're a polygamous husband then you're also a polyamorous husband. Polyamory means many love or "participation in multiple and simultaneous loving or sexual relationships." A polygamous husband would be involved in multiple love and/or sexual relationships since he has more than one wife, so therefore a polygamist would also be a polyamorist.

Of course, there are those people or groups who identify themselves as polyamory only, and that's since they have multiple love and sexual relationships but don't necessarily get married. Polygamists would just be involved in a different type of polyamorous relationships then those who are only polyamorous, since to be a polygamists you have to be married by definition and not just in a boyfriend/girlfriend or any other non-marital relationship.

May I suggest that the thesis of this thread has it precisely backward? :ugeek:

Polygamist is the general term, meaning merely "having more than one spouse".

Polyamory (both men & women are free to have multiple spouses) is a species thereof, which this board decries as un-Biblical.

Polygyny (men only are allowed multiple spouses, women have one husband) is the species thereof espoused and promoted by this board as Biblical.

Therefore "All polyamorists are polygamists, but not all polygamists are polyamorists."

Sort of like, "Both men, monkeys, dogs, cats, horses, and whales are mammals, but not all mammals are monkeys."

Polyamory (from Greek πολυ [poly, meaning many or several] and Latin amor [love]) is the practice, desire, or acceptance of having more than one intimate relationship at a time with the knowledge and consent of everyone involved.

A Husband with more than one Wife is a Polyamorists... technically...

You probably won't see me going around calling myself a Polyamorist however.

I would agree.

Polygamy is the general term encompassing all forms of plural marriage and plural relationships.

Polygyny is the practice of one man having more than one wife.

Polyandry is the practice of a woman having more than one husband.

Polyamory is the practice of either sex having more than one partner of either sex with or without any commitment therein.

I, as well as many others, have always had the view that polyamory is more like the free-love movement of the hippies. Swingers, if you will.

I slightly disagree with your definition of polygamy. Polygamy only involves multiple marriages or multiple marital relationships. Polyamory involves multiple relationships but my thinking was that a relationship can either be marriage or non-marital intimate relationships, and that leaves the door open to include polygamy.
