Pharisees adding to God's Law

I was stunned this morning to hear something which I have heard probably hundreds of times before. I guess my renewed interest in the Old Testament and recent study of Exodus and Hebrews got me thinking. The preacher said that Pharisees were wrong to have added hundreds of their own laws into God's original 10 commandments. This is what I recall hearing many times over the years, but I got thinking about it and found that my lack of knowledge leaves me without a clear explanation. Surely, God gave many more than 10 commandments to His people, Israel. God also expected them to obey issues of Levirate marriage, gleaning and slavery, and much more.

Does anyone have a link or list that stipulates what God gave in His Law and what was added by men afterward? I am interested as I consider also what the church has added to what Jesus and the apostles actually said, things such as mandatory church membership, music preferences, etc. and also those things that God has indeed said is for the church that we have dismissed as cultural or that sort of thing.

I want to obey God in all things, but I find myself often wondering if some of the things we suppose to be from God are truly from man, and also many things we suppose to be man made are actually given by God for our benefit, instruction, correction, , and sanctification. Anyone willing to share more on this issue? I know it could tend to become divisive, but if we all come with God's glory and His Word as the primary means of understanding, I believe we will continue to have unity and mutual edification, so long as we come with humble hearts and true love for one another.

Thanks all for putting up with all my questions. I find the more I learn about God's Word, the more I realize that I have much more to learn. May the Lord continue to humble us in a spirit of love, to bless us and conform us to the image of His beloved Son, our Savior Jesus Christ.
 
In Re: Phrisees adding to God's Law. In today's world, controled by the same people as in the Mesiah's time on earth as a man, "The Phrisees", the Jews of Rev. 2:9, 3:9. They are Satan's offspring from Esau, or Edom. From long ago these same people have been in the business of surpressing all truth concerning the Contract that the Creator made with the children of Israel at Mount Sinai. Most people today know nothing of that very important Contract. The Creator gave the Children Of Israel approximately 759 statutes, ordinances, end decrees, at that time, on the tablets of stone, and maybe more. I don't think it matters as much what the Pharisees added to Gods Law, as it does how they've totally deceived the people into believing a totally different Law to what the Scriptures teaches. I read a lot of posts on Biblical Families, and realize that a lot of people don't understand what they are reading, or don't read the Scriptures, but instead depend on someone else's interpretation.
Consider, lot's of people will argue the multiple Wives issue until they're blue in the face, while having no knowledge of the biblical truth of the matter. Of course that's not the only issue that is a sore spot for most Religeous people who is unlearned.
The Scriptures is not to be altered, and who ever does alter the Scriptures, for the purpose of misleading the people will receive the wrath of the creator. So, read the Scriptures for Yourself, get You a good Strongs Concordance, and look up the words.
The biggest problem today is all the preachers in the 501 (c)(3) government churches are government controled and cannot preach the truth to the people, or they'll loose their license to be a preacher. The schools they attend is all controled by the Unilateral Universal Association, all having one agenda. Look it up for Yourself, don't believe Me, I might Lie to You, but not likely.
The Pharisees Adding to God's Law, is not as big a problem as the total
deception of His law.

Our Country is in BIG trouble because of the Breach of Our Contract with the Creator, as a nation, and it will only get worse if the people don't come to their sences. Fast.

My issue is not a lack of a concordance, as the things specifically added are not in the Scriptures. Thus, they were added, external, and not truly God's Word. I appreciate your fervor for people to study for themselves, but there is also wisdom in getting counsel from those God has ordained as teachers. We are a body, made up of many members, each fulfilling the job given by the Creator as He has ordained. I do take all counsel here and check it with God's Word to verify its accuracy, which of course this Berean approach is how I came to the conclusion of Christian plural marriage being appropriate.

So, does anyone have a list of those things added (such as the incorrect application of divorce and putting away in Matthew 5) that I originally asked for? :lol:

There is no such thing as a license to be a preacher, and the laws governing the 501c3 are often misunderstood or people are misled by the government as to how they actually apply.I don't approve of asking for special tax status, as there are some limitations imposed by such an act. That said, the only thing they can do, as far as I understand, is revoke the exemption status and impose fines.

A bit of background, for our general fund of knowledge.

God did indeed give 10 commandments in an unusual manner, which to my simplistic mind would seem to set them apart from all others.

He came down from heaven in a cloud with thunder and lightening and fire. Scorched the hell out of the top of Mt Sainai, which is in Saudi Arabia, not the Sanai peninsula, after having the Israelites establish a safety perimeter around its base, announced these 10 in a real loud voice, wrote them on tables of stone instead of parchment or vellum or papyri or clay tablets, and did it a second time when Moses broke the first set. That's pretty dramatic!

They are recorded in Torah in 2 separate places, Exodus 20 and Deuteronomy 5.

Interestingly enough, at the close of the Deuteronomy version, Moses penned these words, "These words YHWH spoke to all your assembly, in the mountain from the midst of the fire, the cloud, and the thick darkness, with a loud voice; and He added nothing more. And He wrote them on 2 tablets of stone and gave them to me."

Pretty clear, right? And when Jesus said that until heaven and earth pass away (which obviously has NOT happened yet), not the dot of an "i" nor the cross of a "t" would pass from the law, He presaumably meant these 10 at least.

Sidebar: With that in mind, you may find it interesting to take a close look at the 4th commandment and at a standard (as opposed to very modern, since the 60s, "school" or "business") calendar, and consider on which day of the week Easter is observed in light of Christ's resurrection on the first day of the week. A bit more research into when and why "Christianity" changed the 4th commandment is also helpful. And while I don't want to side-track this discussion too far, if interested, one can find a number of rather fascinating quotations on the subject at Authoritative Quotations On The Sabbath And Sunday. Now back to the topic...

Following this, Moses went up into the mountain with God and there fasted and communed with Him for 40 days and nights. While there, God gave Moses the rest of the laws intended to govern the society of Israelites, replacing the Egyptian society to which they had become accustomed over 400 or so years of captivity, and hopefully preserving them from the encroachment of the heathen cultures to be found in the land to which they were going.

It was pretty detailed in many areas, and silent in others. There were/are 613 in all. With the exception of The Ten, these were delivered privately via Moses, and recorded upon some lesser medium than the 2 tablets of stone. That seems significant to me. Others seem incapable of finding a distinction, and that is ok, we remain brethren. But since these included things such as instructions for sacrifices pointing forward to the Great Sacrifice, while The Ten do not, I have no personal trouble accepting that at least SOME of these were transitory.

Observant Jews, however, not accepting that Messiah has come once already and completed the sacrificial task, do not see any of them as transitory. Thus, on a Jewish prayer shawl you will see tassles at the four corners of the shawl, each carefully knotted with 613 knots. So far as I know, these 613 can all be found in the first 5 books of the Bible.

However, in an excess of zeal to abide by the letter of the law, the theologians of the land took things further. For example, when the Bible said to rest from your daily work on the Sabbath, they specified that this meant you could not walk further than a specified distance from your front door. So folks would carefully measure that distance down the road and place a marker "Wiedemann Family Sabbath Distance Marker" or some such. You could walk back and forth 5 x on Sabbath within that marker, but could not step one step beyond it.

Sound crazy? How about this one from my own youth? On Sabbath afternoon, we could go for a hike out in the woods, and after 5 miles arrive at a lake all hot and sweaty. Lots of effort expended, right? And we still had to turn around and walk home. But at the lake, we could take off our shoes and wade in the water to cool off, but could not go in swimming. THAT was considered to be breaking the Sabbath.

So believe me, this tendency to add to what God said is alive and well today, just as it was in Jesus' day. It is a species of disbelief -- that YHWH said precisely what He meant to say, and left unsaid what He did NOT want made into a Divine Directive. We'll accept man-made absurdities such as the above while denying the validity of words such as "all", "anything", "nothing", etc. (eg. Luke 10:19). In doing so, we charge God with having Alzheimer's, and in need of our human correction. Bizarre!

Complicating this further, Jesus said that our righteousness must EXCEED that of the Pharisees! Horrors! Until we understand ...

Jesus frequently discoursed upon the Pharisees' attempt to circumvent the law of God by keeping the letter of it in a way that completely missed and circumvented its intent. He frequently engaged in 'reset' practices regarding Sabbath observance. It goes on and on. It is interesting to note that these tended to focus on issues relating to The Ten. In other words, He didn't really discourse on the matter of facial hair, or separation of dairy and meat, or styles of church music, etc.

Then He not only told us that we would be MADE righteous by God's merciful new birth, but then gave us new and additional commands to carry out. These started with Go, Preach, Heal, Forgive, Raise, Deliver, and Give, and expanded into The Great Commission, the addition of the communion service with foot-washing, and others. Some were not given until sometime after Pentecost and through Paul, as His followers were not yet able to grasp it earlier. These included a revelatory understanding of the mystery of God -- Christ dwelling IN and UNITED with us, the need to renew our minds through the washing of the Word, and others.

Having said all that, it seems to be up to each of us to decide how we are going to interact with all this. It seems that we ought to abide by The Ten, at a minimum. plus whatever Jesus said to do. Others of the 613 take some thought. For example, most of us do NOT feel obligated to throw stones at prostitutes or rebellious children, though we may at times be tempted on the latter.

For myself? I've got a long way to go on this Go, Preach, Heal, Forgive, Raise, Deliver, and Give business. Or even fully fulfilling the spirit of The Ten. If I ever arrive at a place where it seems I've really got those mastered, I may turn more than passing interested attention to the rest of those 613.

But I just love and fellowship all over the place with those who are trying to get 'em figured out and appropriately applied now.
 
Cecil, I enjoy reading Your posts, Your Humor is good. From My study and involvment in Law, I tend to write too straight forward for most people's liking.
Concerning the no. 613, there's no need to worry about that, it has no Scriptural value, consider where it orginates. The Pharisees of that day are not from the tribe of Judah, as most Christans are led to believe, there's many mistranslations throughout the various bibles, that leads one to believe that a Judiahite, is a Jew, which is wrong. The Jews are not Israelites, but call themselves Israelis, they know the difference. These same people today have great influence over what is taught in the churches and everything that's taught in the schools, and government. That's why the Mesiah said, at that time, "do as they say, but not as they do".
As for the tem comandments, I think You'll find that most of the other Laws is a spin off the ten.
In the study of the Scriptures, once You Identify who all the players are, and where they fit, and where You fit, in the big picture, the Scriptures is the most important reading You can do. Just knowing that the Creator has allowed Me to know a lot of His intent for man, is a great blessing to Me and My family, and I try to pass it on. I understand that We all don't agree on everything, and We never will, but, the truth will remain the same.

So commandment 164, becomes don't eat cheeseburgers, when interpreted and explained.
Like our churches have American flags, and spend veterans/memorial/independence day, preaching about the wonders of our country and how we should kill people, who think otherwise.
Because we have people to interpret and explain obey caeser for us.

Thanks for the citations, will look that over soon. I was listening to Leviticus again today and noticed that I needed these things written out for me, or at least a synopsis or grouping, to help me in my studies and see how they apply to the family, individuals, etc.
 
Seth, I'm sorry for Your misunderstanding-misapplication of what I wrote.
If You think back, and You have read the Scriptures,the Pharisses were the religious leaders of that day, and strongly influence the religious leaders of today. The same problems existed at the Mesiah's time as does today, read it for Yourself, it's spread all through the New Teatament. Thats why there's only 613 judgments, statutes, and ordinances, rather than 759 and maybe more. The religious leaders of today want to pick and choose, same as the Pharisses.
I have no knowledge of Your commandment 164, having to do with cheeseburgers. I don't eat at fast food joints, but sometimes My wife makes some very good cheeseburgers, I hope I'm not breaking one of them 613.
You speak of Your churches having American flags: I have been inside of a few of Your churches, I have yet to see an American flag flying inside one of Your churches, or on the outside, either. The flag Your churches flys, is a UNITED STATES Military flag, see: U.S Army Regulations 840-10. You've probably never seen an American flag. Sinse 1860 there's been no American flags flown on the united states of America.
All of the UNITED STATES Holidays You mentioned are military bassed. So,

ChrisM, it is not a joke at all. Sorry if this upsets You. You may be one of the lucky ones, but I have seen many birth certificates signed just as I described. It is good that Yours may not be signed that way. I was only pointing out how there's a lot of misconceptions about what people think to be true. I do not speak without knowledge.

ChrisM in reference to your original question the additions to the Torah are known as Halachah (which literally means The Law). There are 1000’s of Halachot it is basically impossible to know them all. The most ancient are contained in the Mishnah. Sorry I don't know of any english translations that would be online, I suggest trying WorldCat or your local library.

Concerning the numbering of the laws of Torah at 613, actually it was Maimonides who came up with that number, in the twelfth century. I happen to have a very easy to read copy (public domain) that I’ll past below. It is true that both before and even after Maimonides other rabbis disagreed about the total number of laws in Torah. If you read below you will probably realize that some of the interpretations are off and some “laws” are missing. I’m not promoting the list only listing for reference as you might find it interesting as well.

T'rumah, Tithes and Taxes

This rule is inferred from the law of the Paschal offering, by similarity of phrase (Ex. 12:44-45 and Lev. 22:10) but it is not explicitly set forth in the Torah. Traditionally, it has been learnt that the rule that the uncircumcised must not eat holy things is an essential principle of the Torah and not an enactment of the Scribes.
403. Not to alter the order of separating the t'rumah and the tithes; the separation be in the order first-fruits at the beginning, then the t'rumah, then the first tithe, and last the second tithe (Ex. 22:28) (CCI19).

Lepers and Leprosy

The King
581. Not to curse a ruler, that is, the King or the head of the College in the land of Israel (Ex. 22:27).

583. Not to appoint as ruler over Israel, one who comes from non-Israelites (Deut. 17:15).
584. That the King shall not acquire an excessive number of horses (Deut. 17:16).

586. That he shall not accumulate an excessive quantity of gold and silver (Deut. 17:17).
587. That the King shall write a scroll of the Torah for himself, in addition to the one that every person should write, so that he writes two scrolls (Deut. 17:18).
Nazarites
588. That a Nazarite shall not drink wine, or anything mixed with wine which tastes like wine; and even if the wine or the mixture has turned sour, it is prohibited to him (Num. 6:3).
589. That he shall not eat fresh grapes (Num. 6:3).
590. That he shall not eat dried grapes (raisins) (Num. 6:3).
591. That he shall not eat the kernels of the grapes (Num. 6:4).

607. Not to offer peace to the Ammonites and the Moabites before waging war on them, as should be done to other nations (Deut. 23:7).
608. That anyone who is unclean shall not enter the Camp of the Levites (Deut. 23:11) (according to the Talmud, in the present day this means the Temple mount) (CCN193).
609. To have a place outside the camp for sanitary purposes (Deut. 23:13).
610. To keep that place sanitary (Deut. 23:14-15).
611. Always to remember what Amalek did (Deut. 25:17) (CCA76).

one of the ways that i have read about in which the pharisees used legalism to circumvent the law about the sabbath day's journey was to place minor personal items at certain points around the area and thus designate that location as a dwelling place of theirs. on the sabbath they could travel at will, being never more than a sabbath day's journey from any one of those "dwellings".

as one can see from reading ephraim's list, the 613 laws were not additions to YHWH's laws but refinements and restatements of what YHWH had already given them in scripture.
 
I found a very interesting verse in Jeremiah 7:22,23 the other day that deals with this topic directly.

Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Put your burnt offerings unto your sacrifices, and eat flesh.
For I spake not unto your fathers, nor commanded them in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, concerning burnt offerings or sacrifices:
But this thing commanded I them, saying, Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and ye shall be my people: and walk ye in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well unto you


If you search Exodus you will find this in Exodus 19:5 on the very first occasion of Pentecost.

Josephus also mentions that God only gave 10 commandments on Sinai. The rest of the commandments happened because the people were so zealous to serve God that they asked Moses for more! Antiquities of the Jews 3.5.4&5.

Kind of gives new meaning to the Law of Moses and "If you love me, keep MY commandments"
