Offgrid homestead

Has anyone built an offgrid homestead starting with bare land. We are thinking about starting on a new property with bare land and building from there. Looking to get a little farther out from the city.

Anyone planning to go that direction?

Good evening David D, my wife and I did exactly that. We've been living in our 275 sq ft tiny home for 3 years now.

We will build our main house as money comes in, we were going to do a straw-bale home but the cost of doing that seemed really high when you look at some of the stuff that you have to do to seal the straw bales.

In our new home the exterior walls will be 2 x 6 walls instead of your typical 2 x 4.

The only debt we have is Our Land payment. I was a union boilermaker by trade for 16 years got tired of traveling took a huge pay cut lowered our standard of living and now live on a 20-acre parcel. We closed out my annuity which is part of my retirement and use that to build everything on the property 100% debt free. Our well house is an 8' x 8' building there is enough room in that structure to put 3 86 gallon pressure tanks if needed right now we only have one and two upright freezers in there.

The powerhouse is a 10 x 10 building that will house all the batteries and electronic stuff for the solar and wind set up.

We will have electricity on the property from the outside world as I want to build a barn and start building trailers, I know how to weld and put things together, and I don't want to build a solar system big enough to do that. If you all would like to see some pictures of our journey let me know.

You’re absolutely right, but I currently have school loans to repay! I’d live in a tent if that was what God called me to do. But for now he has me in a lovely little home out in the country while I finish my schooling but I’m excited to start some container gardening soon! The first step to my “urban” homesteading. :)

Arkansas or Idaho Would be our current top two places to look at homesteading

It looks like I will have to fire up the desktop as I've moved all the pictures from my tablet to it. I thought I still had some on here.

That’s the direction I have started looking toward and planning for. I grew up off the grid in Alaska, so for me it’s just kind of like going home haha. I want my kids to have the beauty and peacefulness of natural surroundings and lots of hard work that I experienced as a kid. I want my kids to learn to be self sufficient, hard working, and dependable people, and of course, most importantly, followers of Christ. Growing up off the grid is a much more conducive environment for learning those traits.
