If you rest, you'll rust!

Ok ok it is very unfortunate that this health forum is probably not as active as the rest of forums, considering it goes a month or 2 with no new posts. That is disappointing!!! This is one of my favorite topics...i love anything and everything when it comes to health and fitness! I love eating right, i love exercising (especially how I feel after), and love to share what I do to keep healthy and love to hear what others do! Of all the things in this world that I can't change, the health and wellbeing of my body is one thing that I can change! I have 10 more pounds to lose until I'm back to my pre-pregnancy weight and I'm working on it!!! But I've accomplished alot, considering I gained like 50 lbs as a result of my pregnancy and was in a size 14! but I'm now in a size 10, but so working on getting back into my size 8 pants that I was in before I got pregnant! I love having friends and family with the same goals of being fit and healthy...it makes staying on track so much easier and can make fitness even fun! So I know I'm new, and becoming very educated as a result of the other forums, but I hope this forum picks up a little, and we share our health and fitness tips together! Because our body is a temple! God gave us one body! take good care of it, cause if you don't no one else will!

Hubby is 52 and I am 46. We have begun running and walking in the mornings. We have recently set a goal of being able to run 2 miles straight by Christmas. Today we ran between 1/2 and 3/4 of a mile. Tomorrow we will try to do 3/4. We will do that for a week and then move up to a mile. Eventually we would like to be able to run 5K and 10K races and maybe even attempt a 1/2 marathon or even a marathon sometime in the future. We have heard of clubs that work toward doing a marathon in each state and that sounds like a lot of fun-even if it sounds far-fetched at this moment in time.

I have recently discovered how toxic processed carbohydrates are to me both physically and emotionally, so I am trying to learn to live without them for the most part. We both need to lose a few pounds.

As for losing weight and healthfulness in general. I’m currently doing a 40 day juice fast (slightly modified). I’m two weeks into it and feel great. Basically no food, just juices (real juice) and soups as long as the veggies, noodles, etc. get liquefied (ran through the blender). I have eaten some in the last two weeks but found it takes very little food to fill me up. At first the diet was a little challenging, I drank a lot more juices at first but now I’m pretty much use to it and not drinking as much. I’m finding I have a lot more energy and just feel good. I’d recommend this diet to anyone as long as they can take along enough juice or soup to work or wherever. And I’d suggest starting on a weekend or sometime that they will be close to home and can get use to it.

As far as the title of this post “If you rest, you’ll rust” I can relate to that. I’m mostly in my office doing a lot of desk work all day. I got to a place where I just felt tired all the time and I know I’ve put on a few pounds to. We are a health conscience family to begin with; eat organic, kosher, very little meat. Yet once I got out of a regular exercise routine and had to spend more time in the office I found in time things can go backward. Yes our bodies are a temple of the Holy Spirit and these temples need regular maintenance and upkeep.

That's great! Thanks for sharing! Keep it up! You're never too old to get fit. I am 26 and hope that this can be as much of habit as brushing my teeth it, for the rest of my life. I wish I could go walking or running, especially in the weather that we currently have, but my baby is a little too young for that. As she gets older i think it would be fun to go running together. But til then I try to workout every day with Sharon Mann who comes on TV every morning round 7am or so, i think. I tape her and just watch her when I can, which i try to everyday. She really motivates me...and love that she's right there in my living room. There are no excuses, and she's proof of that considering she has 3 small children and still finds the time.

As for food...I'm not much for dieting exactly. I believe that depriving yourself of anything is how you fail, and if you go too long without a certain food, even sugar, you go crazy with cravings and go on an all out binge. I believe in taking TIME to eat (and i mean not eating too FAST) and listening to your body and stopping when you're satisfied...and not when you get that "full" feeling. I believe in portion control. If you want a cookie, take one cookie and put the rest out of sight. If you want a soda, drink 1, but lets drink water the rest of the day. I also don't believe in eating past 6pm. You need time to burn dinner off before going to bed. The most weight you gain is in your sleep. If I do eat after 6pm I try to workout after so my metabolism speeds up and it will less likely become fat.

Real juices? that you get at the store? that say 100% juice or something? When people say real juices i pretty much know which juices that excludes, but not sure which ones that does include...

It’s suppose to be any not from concentrate fruit or vegetable juice with no additives. We actually juice our fruit ourselves or we buy bottled from the local health food store. A brand called Lakewood sells juice that is organic with no artificial stuff or preservatives, no sugars added… I actually prefer to juice fresh fruits instead of buying bottled though.

The most weight you gain is in your sleep.

You will gain fat after overeating no matter what time of day. The reason the myth about eating in the later afternoon is bad is so often spread, is that often people who are eating late are eating an "extra" meal or eating too much because they waited too long and feel too hungry and overdo it.

Depending on your schedule and routine, eating later may actually be more beneficial as your body processes nutrients from food most efficiently when it is at rest.

It is important not to eat RIGHT before bed as digestion needs a bit to complete and can interfere with sleep. Hormone and blood sugar levels may actually help you go to sleep more easily and sleep better if you time your bedtime with the digestive process.

I wondered if I was getting fat because I was eating late when I was working a 3-11 2nd shift. It turned out that I was just eating too much because midnight was a long way from my lunch. I would be very hungry, make lots of food and eat it all. It wasn't very healthy and once I started researching I found out that eating late is actually good for your bones and muscles if you do it appropriately.

Anyway, you all sound much more healthy than me but I figured I should do my part to help dispell the health myths out there.

P.S. I am a huge fan of your non-deprivation strategy. The only way I have ever been able to make progress eating better is to be ok with slipping up on some "bad" food. If I try to follow any particular diet strictly I just fail almost immediately.

Just like we need grace with our Lord and Savior, we need grace in our discipline. We strive to run every day, knowing that we will be waylaid from that goal at least once or twice a week. Every week that we manage to exercise more days than not, we consider a success. I hated feeling guilty for not exercising every day.

I would like to add to this post Lisa. I have to say that I love the fact someone likes to talk health also. I don't mind discussing my body and how I would like to get in better shape. I once weighed 415 lbs and wore a size 52 pants. I felt so bad and decided to something about it. I went on a diet under the guidance of a doctor. In 17 months I went from a 415 down to 265. I was in a size 42 pants. I learned that we have to take care of the outside just as we do the inside. Well I went through a tough year and gained back up to 369 but I am rededicated to getting back the way I am suppose to be. I have ask God to give me the strength in myself to get the outside to go with the inside. I have been on my diet now 10 weeks and I am down 47 pounds. I am only 57 more pounds away from being back to where I was. My wife Lacey is on board with me this time but being a woman I won't discuss her weight, lol. Just know she is doing a wonderful job also. I know this is always a battle but with willpower and faith, I truly believe I can and will do this. Don't give up on your diet. Keep exercising and changing your diet and you can and will be back where you want to be. I come to the conclusion mine is not a diet but a change in my life. I know I must continue to change the inside and it will help me change the outside. I am all in on a forum for health issues such as weight among other struggles we all may have.

God Bless, Happy Holidays!

Just an update...
We ran over a mile today. Our first goal is to be able to run 2 miles by Christmas. At this rate, we are quite sure we can make it.

Thank you. We would very much like to be able to run in 5K and 10K events next year. We are on our way. Slow and steady wins the race, right?
