House Structure - Rules, Systems, and Traditions

I have been thinking about having a signet ring made representing the house. Something with a family crest that can be passed down to the first born of each generation or maybe having one made as each son comes to age. I wanted to have it inscribed, to be a reminder for who this house serves, and it got me to thinking what other things do people do when establishing their houses.

What kind of structures have you put in place when setting up your house, i.e. Family Crests/Coat of Arms, Mission Statements, Weekly Family Meetings, Inheritance trusts, Mandatory Game Nights, Hardship Fund, ect. Things that you as the patriarch set in place and expect the rest of your family to adhere to. Your law so to speak.

Friday night is our family movie night. Period. We all come together and watch a movie.

Aside from that we live on a ranch and things happen and we roll with it.

We have a family game/movie night on Friday, mission statement, setting up a trust this year is on my to-do list. We're intensely discussing the benefits to living a more tribal/clan focused family life. My sons only have the opportunity to play video games for 30 minutes on saturday IF they accomplished all their required chores and tasks for the week. They are only permitted that play time if they were responsible enough to get their work done.

On thing that I like in our household is that all meals are eaten together as a family. Obviously if one has other obligations then that is an exception. I am saddened when I look at the families of my class mates. It is the norm that everyone eats for themselves, when they are hungry. Mostly some microwaved stuff.

My mothers side of the family has had a family crest since something, something 1500s, but I have always found it a tad pretentious. It is only really used by my relatives in Germany. One of my uncles has it embroidered in all of his shirts. I do like the signit ring my mom uses for documents.

My great grand-father did set up a family trust. In fact most of the profits of the family business does not get paid out to the family, most gets reinvested in the company, the employees get a larger percentag as a whole.

We always sit down together for dinner.. at minimum for when the boy eats so that he will have the experience and tye family together is normal for him. We generally eat with him but on occasion things will go awry but it is important to have the time together.

It is nice to know ones family history that well. Many of us in the States are obviously less well versed in our roots. I am lucky in that I know a fair amount about my patrilineal side and our hitting dirt with the Winthrop fleet in 1630. We would have gotten here with the Mayflower but we like to sleep in now and then.
No signat ring but that would be fun. Apparently it was that sort of family in that there were several notables but I have the sneaking suspicion that my direct ancestor may have been the black sheep. At minimum the one that was following the wild geese.

One of the requirements we have when we are at home is to eat our meals together. We then have a time each morning and evening with me reading the Bible and then praying. If we have visitors they join us. That's led to many opportunities for people to hear the Word of God, and also ask and have questions answered.

We eat all meals together. We also have Bible study together. We pray together each day. We have occasional family meetings as things come up and we have nightly family time where we just talk or watch tv together.
