Sitting here this morning thinking about how and where to obtain a country property or piece of land most anywhere in the country (USA) to call my own, and got to thinking about the housing crisis ...
Here's a solution idea: If the government pays off the mortgage on a piece of property via mortgage insurance, the property should NOT then remain with the bank, but go to the government. After all, it just paid for it.
The government should then transfer title to whatever organization administered the Homestead Act, reviving same! Such properties, urban or rural, large or small, should then be published on lists available to the general public who can then file on them on the same basis as it used to be.

"Nominal fee. Live there for 5 years, maintain and improve the property over the state in which you found it, and it's yours!"
Might solve the problem for lots and lots of folks! (Including some / many of us!)
