For This Cause

Matthew 19:5 "And (Jesus) said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?"

For what cause? Because God made them male and female? Is there more to this phrase than meets the eye?

For the cause of joining a woman in a covenantal union. At that point they become their own separate family unit. He is no longer the son of a patriarch, he becomes a patriarch.

Yes this cause is a reference to the purpose of a union. For this reason/cause, a new union forming, that a man will leave out from under his father and mother to form a new family.

... he becomes a patriarch.

Thinking this through ... sorry, I had caffeine last night and the ol' mind goes bzzzt! ...

So, instead of calling a married man "Mister" So-and-so, it would be better to call him "Patriarch" So-and-so? Ok.

Next, the Celtic gene kicks in. "Patrick" sounds very similar to "Patriarch". Hmmm. "Paddy"!!!

So in future, if you happen to meet me north of the Mason-Dixon line, you may respectfully refer to me as Paddy Wiedemann. If south of the same line, "Paddy Cecil" or "PaddyC". I'll take that over Deacon or Elder any day!

So what is the cause?
God created male and female for the cause of entering into a covenant relationship for the purpose of being fruitful, multiplying, replenishing the earth, and having dominion over it Gn.1:27-28.

Being fruitful, multiplying, replenishing the earth and having dominion over it....boy, there is always something to do, isn't there. :D

I think you put your finger on it, the cause is because God made them male and female. If we read these two verses together as one sentence, it does make a bit more sense.
Matt 19:4-5
And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, and said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?

It appears that Jesus is telling us through His servant Moses that because of distinctly different genders, the appropriate relationship is that of marriage. He is also telling us that a genuine marriage is only between a man and woman, not two of the same gender. In earlier times or in simpler cultures today, marriage is more of an imperative for an ordered society and for personal survival. It is our corrupted western culture that has so trivialized marriage as to make it only an option. While there may be the rare and isolated case where a man or woman have been singled out by God for a purpose where singleness is best, it is not God's design for His creation. After all, it was God who said that it was not good for the man to be alone.

How does this reconcile with the call to do so if Adam indeed had no father or mother?

"Which was the son of Enos, which was the son of Seth, which was the son of Adam, which was the son of God."
Luke 3:38 KJV

"Adam, which was the son of God."
Was God Adam's father?

obviously the definition of the word father is in play here.

but lets go straight to the core issue. did adam leave his "father" when he established his family?
methinks not, and mark's point still stands. in fact, this point should be a problem to the "law of first mention" folks in that the first marriage did not fit guideline stated in Matt 19:4-5.

Don't get me started on all the supposed "laws" in Biblical interpretation. Many are downright man centered and only apply to those things which the purveyor of certain doctrines wishes to apply it to.

Men, we have a tremendous responsibility, not to dominate or demand, but to lead in strength and honor, to obey God's Word rather than man's beliefs. We see the effects within our own lifetime, and we can choose to join the crowd or follow the Lord God and His Word. We didn't get from Christian morals to homosexual marriage overnight, and we won't change society through laws. We must not only speak the truth, but be faithful followers of Jesus Christ, who in great love and mercy stands against the culture to do what is right.

Well said.

Amen.

Completely agree Mark. We need to preserve the order God ordained for church and family, if we don't do that we're on a slippery slope to our Christianity becoming wishy washy nonsense.
