Fishing

I have found it a challenge since I started fishing to catch a high guaility amount of fish that can be prepared and feel my stomach up for the week. With that said does anyone have any tricks or ideas that they can share that can help increase the amount and sizes of fish catched. About 3 years ago I started using cheese when fishing and have noticed a slight increase in the amount of fish being caught. Any help or ideas would greatly appreciated

Wher are you fishing rivers lakes or sea?
What is your target fish?

We fished every weekend when I was growing up, and the bait always depended on the fish we wanted to catch. It sounds like MrB is going to address this. :) Frogs, leeches, worms, dough balls, corn, flashy tackle, minows, etc. We used it all, but always the right bait for the right fish.
I'm almost clueless by now, but I must admit learning to fly fish is on my bucket list - that's something I've never done but have always wanted to.

I really do not have a target fish just catch whatever I can
That’s a bit like going hunting and not deciding first what your targets are going to be. You need to choose both the gun and the ammunition for the particular game that you want to bring down.
Neither shotgun slugs nor a .306 are a good choice for ducks, but they can be the right choice for deer, depending on local laws.

Some states allow live bait for fishing, but in others it is illegal. Knowing the laws is a starting point. From there, different fish have different baits that attract them, they also hang out in different areas.

Could not agree more. Catching whatever is there might be fun but might also be a waste of time.
some fish are not worth catching to little,to many bones, not enough meat to justify the time to clean up and eat.
sting rays are fun but also dangerous, eels are a nusence , as are sharks.
we use nets , long lines and fishing rods. Each way we fish targets a different type of fish.
we mostly fish in the sea. I’ve never used flys in a river. I’ve used lures trawling at night in lakes with success. The fish in lakes and the rivers here are best at different times of the season. The phase of the moon has a bearing on fish movement and success. If it’s tidal always fish on incoming tide, once the tide turns to going out, go home.
Definitely know the laws of what you are allowed to do %100. If you get caught fishing in a reserve or doing somthing illegal ministry of fisheries here will most likely confiscate your fishing gear, that’s rods lines nets and even your boat.
if the weathers nice take food and a beer. If there’s no fish at least you will have a relaxing day.
oh and throw back the little ones they are for next year or the future.
