Perhaps. Perhaps not.
Remember that Genesis is the story of how things BEGAN. So, if all we have is the one story, we could interpret it either of two ways.
We could say, "Begin as you mean to continue." The beginning was 1:1, so that is how it is supposed to be. Of course, there were lots of other elements to that beginning story, such as living nude in an orchard, that we don't consider binding.
We could also interpret it by saying, "Ya gotta start SOMEwhere." Even if, over the 900+ years of his life, Adam married SEVEN wives, ONE of them woulda had to be the first.
So which is right?
Bear in mind that the man who wrote Genesis, Moses, had 2 wives himself. And in Revelation, God is writing the names of the twelve tribes of Israel on gates of the Holy City -- and they come from the 4 wives of one man.
You will find both monogamous AND polygamous marriages throughout the Bible, with God blessing both. In fact, MANY of the great heroes of the Bible, men who God talked to directly or sent angels to, had more than one wife. Seems like if God disliked the practice, He could have easily said so at any time -- but He never did.
So it seems as though the "gotta start SOMEwhere" interpretation of the original story makes more sense. Although if you really wanna hold to the other version, and go live nude in an orchard, have at it.
