dreams

i would appreciate a discussion/ or information, thoughts on how to consider a dream in accordance with the bible.
for example having a dream that leaves a person with a definite impression that God has given a clear glimpse of something in the future, what does a person do with this information, how to proceed, what to make of it?

First things first, it must line up with what the bible says. If it's telling you to do something that is against God's law or against something written in the bible then it's not a dream from God.

You can ask for confirmation from God if you like. I have done this, and gone to sleep and had literally the exact same dream, word for word. That to me is confirmation.

Pray over the dream. Ask God to let you know if it is from Him, the interpretation, and then what He wants you to do with that knowledge. Understand that the interpretation may be something completely different to what you thought, and you may not receive that info for quite a while. Sometimes it comes in bits and pieces.

Please bear in mind that any information on how christians are supposed to consider dreams in accordance with the Bible is subjective personal opinion, because the Bible does not instruct christians on the process of dream interpretation. Does the Bible mention dreams that were interpreted? Yes. Does the Bible instruct us how to go about it? No. Please be cautious when it comes to dreams.

thank you, both of you.
i should clarify what i mean by ' how to proceed ',
i mean as far as processing my own stunned thoughts.
as far as acting on the dream, i wasn't told to do anything, two things simply happened in the course of life, followed by two odd things being ABLE to happen contrary to the previous plan.
of course iv already asked God what to do with this dream, but i'm frankly dumbfounded and probably haven't even been able to be clear enough in my prayer, tho i know He knows.
the other thing
is that a general (biblical) discussion on dreams would be very interesting for all, if people can loosen up and just share thoughts
in the world, dream discussions just turn into a lot of nonsense.

I've never had a prophetic dream so I can't speak to those things. But I have had dreams that have spoken to concerns of mine and sometimes it feels like wisdom being revealed to me in the dream. Then I think about it and realize that my dream was just putting things together that I had already seen or thought about.

Like one dream I thought two people I knew were going to have a baby and they were not married and there was no reason to think they were dating. But I had seen them touch each other and the touch wasn't exciting like you'd expect it to be with two people who were not intimate.

In my dream I realized they were intimate but it was something I already knew.

Not saying your dream is like this but maybe my experience might help you with yours.

I think @FollowingHim2 has suggested a good way to process your own stunned thoughts. Although the Bible doesn't give specific instructions, her suggested procedure follows clear Biblical principles.

And @Asforme&myhouse's caution is also advisable - don't jump to one conclusion and make major life decisions based on one possible way a dream could be interpreted.

The same dream will be interpreted by 5 different people in 5 different ways. So I wouldn't rely on someone who claims to be a "dream interpreter" to tell you what God is trying to tell you. God didn't give them the dream, and He wasn't speaking to them. They will interpret it in the light of their presuppositions and mindset. For instance, if you see a church on fire, one person will say "It's a revival, the Holy Spirit is filling the church and they're all on fire for God", and the next will say "It's a terrorist attack, the church is about to be persecuted". If you did some digging you'd probably find that the first person keeps talking about revival everywhere, and the second keeps talking about dangers to Christians - they've read their own presuppositions into the dream.

In scripture, when someone who is NOT following God gets a dream (e.g. Pharoah), a follower of God may interpret it for them - but when someone who IS following God gets a dream (e.g. Joseph, Mary's husband) they tend to know what it means themselves. Most dreams in scripture are interpreted by the person receiving the dream.
But I have had dreams that have spoken to concerns of mine and sometimes it feels like wisdom being revealed to me in the dream. Then I think about it and realize that my dream was just putting things together that I had already seen or thought about.
And this is very true. Your dream doesn't have to be from God to be meaningful - it could be from your own subconscious. That doesn't mean it's wrong, that might mean it's worth paying attention to also. But if it's from your own subconscious mind, it really will only make sense to you! It's you talking to yourself.

So IF your dream was from God, He gave it to you, and the imagery in it is probably designed to make sense to you - and possibly only to you. If it's from your subconscious, it also probably only makes sense to you. Or it's just a random dream.

Your first feeling when you woke, the impression the dream left you with, is probably worth considering - because that could be the impression God intended to leave you with (or the conclusion your mind had reached at the end of its pondering). If you woke feeling a clear encouragement to do general things that you should be doing anyway and have no serious downside - like if you saw some sort of disaster coming and felt you really should have more food stores, or felt you should go visit another church one Sunday, or whatever - just go ahead and do these sorts of things. You won't regret them anyway.

If you think God might be telling you to do something more major than this, which you would regret if you were mistaken, then pray and wait for Him to confirm it in multiple ways, don't act on one dream alone. If He really wants you to do something major, He can make sure you clearly get the message.

If the dream seems more prophetic, or you really don't know what it means at all, again just pray and wait for Him to clarify it. But remember what Sarah said - you may not know what it means for months, or even years. It may only be after something you saw actually happens that you'll realise what the rest of the dream is about. Be patient.

And if He never clarifies it - it was just a random dream.

My wife has been having dreams the past month that I've taken other women as wives and such..not sure if that's from pregnancy hormones, her own insecurities (that I would leave her for someone else), or maybe the Lord speaking to her? Most of the dreams came before I mentioned to her that the Bible never condemns polygyny, although I haven't spoken to her yet about applying those principles. Would be pretty amazing if they were from God, but I can't say for certain.

There is some excellent advice in the previous comments, I will just add another perspective.

If you feel that Yah has sent you a dream, start out by simply enjoying the fact that He chose to give it to you. It doesn’t have to mean anything other than He is opening up a line of communication. Let the situation give you the warm fuzzies.
It probably not a test or anything to be concerned about. Accept it with thanksgiving and see if it gets repeated. But mostly allow it to be an expression from Him.
If He wants to take it deeper, just be open to Him doing so. If He wants it interpreted, He will provide the circumstances. Just use it as an occasion to snuggle closer to Him.

More years ago than most of the people on this board have been alive I had an extremely vivid dream that there was smoke coming out of the apartment above us in the duplex that we owned. I actually went outside and tried to see anything wrong. Nada.
Less than 30 hrs later the heater burped soot. A lot of soot. Fire department and all. No damage other than the cleaning bill to the insurance company.
I don’t believe that the dream was a warning that I failed to perceive/act upon. Just Him letting me know that He was aware of me and mine. That He would be with us and cared about us. It’s pleasant to know that He has His eye on us among the billions.

That was pretty!!!

And then there's Gary Wright. And Aerosmith.

And that song by Andre, Schwandt and Kahn.
