Demographic Winter and Falling Birth Rates

Here is columnist Don Feder’s synopsis (from March 2008) of a real crisis – one that threatens to overshadow all others experienced in human history (and that was first made known in a powerful way by Ben Wattenberg, in his book “The Birth Dearth” in 1988). It is anybody's guess how modern welfare states (which due to their very high tax-regimes make large families uneconomical) are going to react to this situation.

In a new documentary video “Demographic Winter” (available at http://www.demographicwinter.com) Philip Longman, a demographer and author of “The Empty Cradle: How Falling Birthrates Threaten World Prosperity,” observes: “The on-going global decline in human birthrates is the single most powerful force affecting the fate of nations and the future of society in the 21st. century.”
Doomsayers from Thomas Malthus to Paul Ehrlich have warned of “overpopulation” leading to depleted resources and mass starvation. In reality, more people have generated to more prosperity and higher standards of living.

What the world faces in the 21st century is another type of demographic crisis, but one that is painfully real: falling fertility rates and aging populations which could ultimately endanger civilization.

The average woman has to have 2.1 children during her lifetime-- just to replace current population.

In less than 40 years, fertility rates have fallen by over 50% worldwide. In 1970, the average woman had 6 children during her lifetime. Today, the global average is 2.9. The United Nations Population Division predicts a further decline to 2.05 by 2050.
In much of the industrialized world, the crisis can be discerned even now:

Europe might as well hang a “Going Out of Business” sign on its door. The average birth rate for the European Union is 1.5, well below replacement (2.1). In Italy, it’s 1.2.

Russia has a birth rate of 1.17, down from 2.4 in 1990. There are now almost as many abortions as births in the Russian Federation. The nation is losing roughly 750,000 people a year. Its current population (143 million) is expected to decline to 112 million by 2050. In a desperate effort to stave off demographic winter, the government is offering a baby bonus of 250,000 rubles (the equivalent of $9,200) for every child a family has after the first.

Worldwide, there are 6 million fewer children (6 years of age and younger) today than there were in 1990. This is an initial tremor of a coming earthquake. If current trends continue, by 2050, the world will hold 248 million fewer children under 5 than it does today.

The industrialized world will soon face severe labor shortages. The European Union estimates a shortfall of 20 million workers by 2030.

In the developed world, populations are rapidly aging. In 1989, 11.6% of Japan’s population was over 65. Less than 20 years later, seniors are 21.1% of the Japanese people. Its low birthrate (1.25) and graying population are why almost no one talks about Japan Inc. anymore. In the 1990s, Japan’s stock market fell 80% from its all-time high and its real estate market lost 60% of its value.

In industrialized nations as a whole, those over 60 now constitute 20% of the population-- a figure which will rise to 32% by 2050. By then, according to UNPD, these societies will have two seniors for every child.

The developing world isn’t far behind. In the Philippines, the birth rate dropped from 6 in the early 1970s to 2.8 today, with further declines in store. In Egypt, in the 1960s, the average woman had 7.3 children during her lifetime, compared to 3.7 today. Mexico’s birthrate is only 2.1, the same as America’s.

This “Demographic Winter” will impact on many areas of our lives:

What will happen in the First World as fewer and fewer workers are called on to provide pensions for more and more retirees? At what point will the burden become so onerous that young workers will simply rebel and refuse to support a system that they couldn’t possibly hope to benefit from?

How will Russia, which is expected to lose a third of its population by mid-point of this century, defend its borders? If Russia, which occupies the largest territory of any nation, dissolves into enclaves of squabbling ethnic groups it will destabilize both Europe and Asia.

Due to falling birthrates, at some point in the century, the world’s population will begin to decline. Then the decline will become rapid. We could even reach population free-fall.

Throughout the course of history, there is no instance of economic growth accompanied by population decline. How can an industrial society be maintained with fewer and fewer workers and consumers?

The foregoing is the backdrop for “Demographic Winter: the decline of the human family.” The documentary is an exploration of the phenomenon by experts-- including demographers, sociologists and economists.

Scholars like Gary Becker (Nobel Laureate in Economics at the University of Chicago), David Popenoe (a professor of sociology at Rutgers and the author of “War Over The Family”), Patrick Fagan (former U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of Health and Human Services, currently Director of the Center for Family and Religion at the Family Research Council) and Longman, a senior fellow with the New American Foundation, discuss the sober reality of humanity’s failure to reproduce itself, as well as causes and consequences thereof.

The discussion is anything but dry and academic. These scholars bring their expertise to bear on a coming catastrophe that’s now well below the radar screen of our national consciousness, but one which will affect our future far more than the hypothetical crises on which the media is fixated.

(ed---Even though this article gives a doomsday picture, one has to ask the question...Can Christian Plural Marriage offer a solution to this issue of falling birth rates around the world?----Doc )

Short answer - yes.

However, I do not believe that the falling birth rate will be the major issue that contributes to the fulfillment of Isaiah 4:1, but the shortage of people resulting from war, famine, plague and the persecution of the saints, (i.e., seals 2-5 - Matthew 24:4-21 and Revelation 6:1-11). We are on the treshold of these things and I believe that lower birth rates will be vastly overshadowed by these.

Be blessed,

Ray

I've seen this site before, its very good.

I'm once again of the opinion that this collaborates with what you're saying Ray, not that it will be the cause, but it will be the cause of the cause. Note the comment about countries being unable to properly defend their borders? This isn't only in terms of numbers (which first world nations are already woefully behind in) but in terms of maintaining and upkeeping technology. That's what makes the lower population countries safe. These countries merely becoming vulnerable would be enough to prepatuate war by any country with a grudge or looking for more territory. Perceived vulnerability by itself is enough to cause a war.

On another note, about that cooling trend discussed earlier, it could actually directly cause a food shortage. Traditional foods in Canada, like wheat and durum, (and the US, though they are slightly different) need a good hot streak to ripen. Its been a very cool year and there is a risk of crop failure in this area, we've gotten some heat now and it may be enough, but if it gets any cooler then farmers would need to substantially change what they plant. Of course no one is telling people about an expected cooling trend, they're talking about global warming. A year or two of general crop failure isnt an issue, but if a cold 5 year trend hits and farmers in general keep planting the longer duration crops it would add up to a big problem.

I dunno, I'm praying for some heat this year and I'm glad I've already broken the 2.1 barrier and have lots of kids yet to have. Whatever these things boil down too its not good.

Interesting points Jair, as usual...he apostle seeing the bigger picture. It is typical of God to fake with the left so people do not see the right upper cut coming in for the knock out blow. Everyone is looking at global warming, when the cooling trend may be more problematic first.

As for the wars, I see that China is getting hit time after time with 'natural disasters' which are taking their toll on the country that is lacking in neither no population nor technology. I see this as God forcing their hand to go to war with the United States. When they shot down one of their own satellites a number of months back, everyone wondered why. It barely made the news, but it is clear to me. Some commentary stated that within 3 hours China could take out America's defense satellite system and there really is nothing that they can do about it. If this happens and China and its allies, (esp. Russia) invade the USA mainland, as some prophets have seen and as lines up both with the Word and what George Washington saw in his vision, then WW III will be the cause of a vast loss of life as the world has never seen. I believe the USA may believe that it has no choice but to go nuclear. Even so, China may strike with nuclear weapons since they know that they can not take down the USA any other way. However, I believe that they will try to delay it if possible or keep it limited because they want to occupy the USA, since they have essentially ruined their country with pollution. In any case it will be nuclear at some point and much of the male population will be wiped out by war, famine and pestilence, (II Esdras 16:18-34 and Isaiah 4:1, esp. NLT). There is speculation that China may use an EMP to take down America’s defenses as well, just prior to an invasion. The prophets that I have read saw a land invasion beginning with submarine attack off both coasts of the USA. Time will tell how all this plays out, but it WILL happen. It is just a matter of time. Those who are not ready will be taken by surprise and then it will be too late, unfortunately. Not many people are really taking this warning to prepare seriously. I am just glad that God took us out when He did, or we would have been stuck because of the economic downturn and would have had a much more difficult time trying to get ready to flee. As it stands now, we are in pretty good shape and able to prepare at a much more leisurely pace.

Maybe at some point more people will start to take my warnings seriously and actually do something about it before it is too late.

Be blessed,

Ray

I agree, Dr. Ray (although I know that comes as no surprise to most here). ;)

But the first blow will be economic, and that one is far closer than the ones that will follow, as we have already given 'the enemy' far more dollar-based 'ammunition' than is necessary for the task. A "run" on the dollar is not even necessary at this point, although I think that is inevitable.

Even a cursory look at history will show that war follows when economies collapse - especially when it is necessary to cover up the kind of malfeasance which is obvious here (even if the scope of that deception exceeds anything in our own history).

Our move to "come out of her" is first, of course, spiritual, and in terms of mindset. But I believe that path also then rapidly includes debt and the system of "dishonest weights and measures" ("fiat" money, or money-by-decree only, in violation of our own Law at every level, based on "faith" in another god, and debt slavery thereto). Other aspects of the journey will follow.

I think that those who choose to trade in some of that 'fake money' while it can still be traded (subsidized even, by the criminals themselves :) ) for things the Bible does call 'money' will be a good move in the short-to-medium-term. (Especially pre-1964 silver coins, which will be well-recognized shortly following a currency meltdown. Many will benefit as such things are once again recognized as a far more honest system than the one which replaced it.)

By such fruits some may come to know other Truths as well, I continue to pray.

I believe what Ray is saying needs repeating. This is not a time to not be noticing what is going on, the signs of the times, the season and what will be happening. All should be sober and take appropriate action.

To back such a warning up, back a few years ago my mother and I both had dreams the same night. I don't usually dream. Both dreams had a huge flash of light in them, automatically known to be an atomic explosion. Her dream started with our family in the USA packing up to flee. It ended with the flash of light. Mine started with the flash of light, and ended with everything gone and military control of the land... martial law. There were other details to the dreams, but those are the most important parts.

To add to that, God gave my mother a scripture back in 2004. "He led them by strait paths, to a place where they could settle." To prove that this is of God, we have followed what opportunities God has provided, and only later realized that each place we lived is on a strait line when mapped... down to the exact houses. So far it's 1300 miles long, with 7 points on the map. We are being led to where to settle, and being shown what to do.

We have never settled anywhere. We have always been like nomads. But my mother has been promised to be spared from the coming troubles, and to live through them, until the end. Is she being led to go be safe in the western world? No. Far from it. What does this tell you? Get out. Now! (Unless the Lord wills otherwise for your family.) Ray and his family were led out for a reason. We were led out for a reason as well. But just because we were doesn't mean everyone is told or shown directly. Our Father rarely works like that. Warnings from others must be heeded. The western world is not a place to be. What is coming is not something anyone will want to be stuck in the middle of. This is a warning to all. God be with you and keep y'all and your families safe.
