Be Careful With Using Online Resources

Using online resources is a great way to find what you need in a hurry. Nothing can replace true studying of the Bible, but when you can’t quite remember that one verse, it helps to have something available that can search through the whole thing in a couple seconds. Care should be given though with how you search for information. If you narrow your search too much, you may miss important details that didn't match the search EXACTLY and lead to making mistakes. Search too broadly, and you’ll end up buried in data and waste valuable time sifting through piles; maybe not even finding what you’re looking for at all. Also, keep in mind that they are programmed by humans and can make mistakes. Someone once said that to err is human, but to really foul up requires a computer.

I was using BlueLetterBible.org this morning and found something interesting. If you look up G1135 for gyne, it will tell you that there are 221 translations: 129 times as "women" and 92 times as "wife". Based on that, I could easily say that gyne is never translated as “wives” or “woman”. But we know that it has. In fact, if you scroll down that screen, you will find Matthew 19:8 which says wives and a G1135 right next to it. So what gives? Maybe they combine them together. So I click on the "wife" link and it searches “wife” with G1135. No Mathew 19:8. In fact, it reports only 81 matches. So I specifically searched "wives" with G1135. There are 12 more. The math isn't exact but it definitely shows that there is an issue with the functionality of the translation summary.

One could even assume that it recognizes they are similar, combines them and displays the form most used. Unfortunately, that doesn't jive with saying “women” is translated 129 times when really it is only done 33 times verses “woman” which is translated 98 times. And, again, the math doesn't match.

If I had stood my ground and proclaimed that gyne has only been translated as Women and Wife, I would look like an idiot. It would be obvious to everyone that I had not studied sufficiently or effectively. Then, everything I say afterward would be noise and ignored.

I’m not making a big deal of this one instance I wanted those who may be new to online resources that sometimes you need to be wise in your methods. Come at your subject from different directions. You’ll strengthen your own overall understanding of the subject and, occasionally, you may even find that you were wrong.

Good Hunting

Thanks so much for heads up on that. Appreciate your encouragement.
