A Woman's Perspective on the Goodness of a Man's Jealousy

When we read the Song of Songs we get a godly lady's insight into her life with her man. Interestingly, we find how she sees the love of her man towards her even when expressed in a jealous manner. We find these words from her towards her head, her beloved man:

"Set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm, for love is strong as death, jealousy is fierce as the grave, its flashes are flashes of fire, the very flame of the Lord. Many waters cannot quench love, neither can floods drown it. If a man offered for love all of the wealth of his house, he would be utterly despised" (8:6-7).

This godly lady saw the jealous attribute of the man over her as love and even as a fire that was the very much the flame of the Lord. This shows us an interesting insight into how this lady in the holy text viewed things in light of her man.

Of course, there are indeed a bunch of pansy sissified men out there who are so weak and so emasculated that they have bought into the lie that to be jealous of the woman or family is wrong. Some others are also confused in that they do not understand a righteous jealousy versus a self-centered jealousy. A Righteous jealousy is motivated by a heart to protect another from harm or destruction or defilement. The man is to be that protector of his woman and or family just as the Lord is a protector of his bride, i.e. his people.

For the Lord's people to be seduced towards a false god brings about the fire of the Lord. He sees how damaging that will be for the person both now and especially in eternity. The same spirit exists in a righteous man when he sees evil seeking to seduce his family. A godly man is aware of evil wolves that seek to kill and destroy just like God is aware of the wolves that seek to kill and destroy his children.

Pastor Whitten shared something with me once that made a lot of sense. He noted that jealousy works only from the top down not from the bottom up.

In this text we see that there is a righteous jealousy. The term here in the Hebrew means having a spirit of ardor. It means being so devoted that it produces intense heat towards its object. It conveys the idea of passion and a spirit of warmth in devotion. Real men have that passion in their hearts for the ones God has given to them through his grace. Real men see themselves as stewards who bear a responsibility to protect and a real godly woman, like this lady in our text, sees that love and spirit when done for her own good as not just the love of the man but as love stemming from the Lord himself. The flashes of it towards the woman are seen by this lady in the text as flashes of love from the heart of the Lord acting in and through the man.
