Doctrine: Adam Represented All of Man and with Him All Fell into Corruption
The name Adam means in the Hebrew language mankind. When God placed Adam in the Garden of Eden this man had inside of him the DNA and seminal spirit essence of every person who would ever be born in earthly history (see Acts 17:26). He stood as the represenative for mankind before God. Satan, who had already corrupted himself, hated this new creation of God. He therefore attacked man through Adam's woman Eve and led Adam to sin. When Adam defied the order of his creator and "he ate" of the forbidden tree's fruit "then the eyes of both were opened" (Gen. 3:7). When Adam rejected God's order he brought disorder and death into the world of humanity. Adam stood as the first patriarch, the first head, of the human race. Paul spoke of this too in the NT when he said: "Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned" (Rom. 5:12). Notice the words "all sinned" are past tense. Since all of mankind was in Adam when Adam, who perfectly represented us all, sinned we were counted as also sinning in him & along with him. Our first head did exactly what we would have done had we been there. If we would have done anything different, since God hates sin, he would have placed us there to be the representative. But since all of us, who Adam represented perfectly, would have done the same thing (and still do today) we were all corrupted in Adam when Adam fell. Just as when Adam ate in sin his woman Eve was then corrupted so too when he ate we inside of him were corrupted as well. As the Bible says, "People are born wicked, and are born sinners; even from birth they have lied and gone their own way" (Psalm 58:3), and "all people are under the power of sin . . . no one does good, not even one" (Rom. 3:9-10).
Life Application
Many people have an unbiblical worldview. Many people think that man is by nature good and innocent. This is not so. As soon as Adam sinned each and every person in the world who would ever be born was charged with sin and then in time born corrupt. Then as these children are physically born, who Paul said these are "by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind" (Eph. 2:3), they mature out their own condemnation by willfully agreeing with their corrupt nature as they too commit personal sins that defy the order of God in their own life. The greatest enemy in the world is ourselves. We humans come forth from the womb bent against our Creator. We are selfish, we are prideful, we are mean, hateful, defiled, and bent on destroying not only ourselves but also others. Short of God's common and supernatural graces intervening, as he immediately did with Adam, we have nothing good in us to claim as from ourselves.
